Following my graduation from a Bachelor of Music program (Boston University in 1963) however, after experiencing the liberal arts as a teacher (Brown University, 1971-75) and an advocate of education that integrates studying the arts and studies of other fields. This is not surprising coming from an ethnomusicologist, who earned an MA in 1967, and also earned a Ph.D. from UCLA. It's not a surprise that the department of ethnomusicology at UC Berkeley, where I was a professor from 1975-1976 is located in the College of Letters and Science's Department of Music. It's fun to pursue many subjects. It is also fun to see the whole overall picture. I love teaching students in the undergraduate level (majors and non-majors, who I've written three textbooks: Music in India the Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically, and Music in Japan: Experiencing Music, Expressing Culture) as well as graduate students. In addition, I have a variety of periods where I engage in mainly academic pursuits in addition to periods of administrative responsibilities to the mix (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-98, Chair The Deans of the College of Letters and Science 1994-1998, Chair of the Group on Asian Studies in 1999 and currently as Chair of the Department of Music again).
